Introduction
The expression JUNIOR HANDLING refers to the presentation of purebred dogs in the show ring by young people. The HANDLER is a "dog handler". In different countries, such as the United States, the trade of HANDLER exists. People entrust him with pedigree dogs which he trains in order to present them successfully at important exhibitions. According to the ranking of the dogs, the HANDLER achieves an interesting gain.
JUNIOR HANDLING originated in England, then established itself in the USA around the 1930s. It was a time when dog shows were the event of the year in which the whole family took part body and soul.
There was never any question of a child presenting his parents' dog or dogs without serious preparation. Although many young people have excellent contact with animals, especially dogs, everything must be learned. It is essential that the child has time and that he receives the necessary instructions. If a human being wants to work with an animal, mutual understanding and a wealth of knowledge are essential.
The child must know how to address a dog so that he understands. He must learn to lead his dog in such a way that it will gladly do what he asks of him. He must also learn what the dog wants and how he can please him. Between the child and the dog, a real and deep friendship must be born.

JUNIOR HANDLING: a sport
Like any other sport, JUNIOR HANDLING is a real kind of sport. And like any other sport, it takes practice, practice, and more practice. But, unlike any other sport, training is not one-sided. Far from it! Working with a dog is captivating. As soon as the dog knows that the child understands him, loves him, that he himself is in good hands, a real team is formed. The dog will do everything in its power for its young master or mistress. He will obey so well and present himself in such an exceptional way that adults will be surprised. JUNIOR HANDLING is the basic level of any human-dog collaboration. The whole family will benefit from the apprenticeship program. Under these conditions, it is a real pleasure to create teams between children and dogs. Sport does not only mean "elite sport", but sport on a large scale. JUNIOR HANDLING is for any child who genuinely enjoys working with and caring for a dog. It doesn't have to be a beautiful dog, it just needs to be a good dog. If these training sessions were to reveal talented JUNIOR HANDLERS, they would know the great moment of the presentation of pedigree dogs on the canine show rings at national or international level, in Switzerland and abroad. This is where young people who are interested in it have the opportunity to exercise their know-how with different breeds, while playing, in a friendly and sportsmanlike competition. Trained, the JUNIOR HANDLERS of today will show adults tomorrow how to present a dog, and all that can be obtained from him through understanding, sensitivity and harmony.
In addition, young people have a positive effect on the public by presenting the dogs as professionals. Adults are proud of what young people manage to achieve, especially if they themselves do not feel very competent in the matter.

Becoming a JUNIOR HANDLER: the beginnings
An inner voice must tell you: "Yes, a friendship with a dog would please me!" And if you hear it, you have to ask yourself, "Time for a dog, do I have it?" a friend needs to see his master often. You will have to take care of it, that is to say brush it, comb it, clean it and maybe give it its food. You will have to take him out and train with him. Maybe you will need the help of your family too. This is why all this must be discussed very frankly in "family council". And if nothing stands in the way and if you want to participate with joy and enthusiasm, then you have already taken the first step that leads to success.
With which dog can you become a JUNIOR HANDLER?
In Switzerland, it is very, simple. The dog should not be aggressive towards people and other animals. He must not be sick and must be vaccinated every two years against rabies. If possible, he should have basic obedience skills, so you can lead him on a leash without using force. Whether tall or short, long or short haired only matters for you personally. If your family already has your partner, of course it's the easiest. But maybe you will also find a neighbor who will entrust you with his dog, or a breeder or the management of an animal shelter. If you are of rather small stature, we recommend a medium to small breed, but if you are athletic and already quite tall, a large and vigorous dog may be ideal for you.
